Asphalt Emulsion
Asphalt emulsion is a water-based coating made from asphalt emulsified with bentonite clay and water. It is cold-applied and comes fibered or non-fibered. This material has been around since the 1940s. When applied per manufacturer’s specifications, the manufacturer warrants this material for 5 to 10 years.
Acrylic
Acrylic coating is a water-based material that can come in many colors; it is reflective if it is white. It is applied over cap sheet, modified bitumen, EPDM, TPO, PVC, and foam. It must be applied when the weather is warm and sunny. This is the least expensive coating material and considered a “cool” roof, Energy Star roof, and may qualify for PG&E rebates.
Polyurethane
Polyurethane is a solvent-based material that can come in many colors; it is reflective if it is white. It is applied over cap sheet, modified bitumen, EPDM, TPO, PVC, and foam. This is a harder surface and works well in ponding areas. It is a “mid-cost” material, a “cool” roof, Energy Star roofing material, and may qualify for PG&E rebates.
Silicone
Silicone is a solvent-based material (which results in a softer surface and works well in ponding areas) that can come in many colors. It is reflective if it is white. It is applied over cap sheet, modified bitumen, EPDM, TPO, PVC, and foam. It can be applied when the weather is cold. This is a “mid-cost” material. When it is white, it is a “cool” roof, Energy Star roof, and may qualify for PG&E rebates.
