Years ago tar and gravel and coal tar pitch membranes were installed as a waterproofing surface for flat roofing structures. Modern technology has provided many other choices today that provide a longer life cycle and reflective properties that help keep the structure cooler in the summer.

Types of Flat Roof Repair

There are many different types of flat roofs. Tar and gravel roofs have layers of material glued together with hot asphalt, with asphalt on top and gravel embedded in the asphalt. Cap sheet roofs have layers of material glued together with hot asphalt, with a roll of mineral surface glued with asphalt to the top instead of gravel. A Modified Bitumen Roof is stronger than a traditional tar and gravel roof or a cap sheet roof. It can be 2 or 3 plies, smooth or with a mineral surface, torched on, mopped on, or self adhering. A TPO roof is a single ply roof that is heat-welded together. A PVC roof is a single ply roof that is heat-welded together, EPDM is a single ply roof that is glued together, Foam roofs and various coatings are used to reflect the UV rays of the sun, as well as maintain and seal the existing roof.

EPDM roofs (ethylene propylene diene terpolyer), M-Class rubber, are a type of synthetic rubber; an elastomer designed for a wide range of applications besides roofing. It does not pollute runoff water. It is a single-ply roof bonded with adhesive.
