California Roofing Contractors Insurance
A major change is only a few months away for liscened California roofers. Starting January, 1, 2007 all active licensees holding roofing (C-39) classification must have either a valid certification of Self-Insurance or a valid Certification of Workers Compensation Insurance with the Contractors State License Board (CLSM). The law requiring that all California roofing contractors have insurance is AB 881 which amends section 7125 of the Business and Professions Code to require that all roofing (C-39) contractors have some type of workers compensation coverage effective January 1, 2007. Regardless of whether or not the business owners has employees they must have valid California roofing contract insurance. Without the proper California roofing contract insurance the licensee (C-39) could have their licensee removed or suspended until they carry California roofing contractors insurance, no exemptions will be granted.
All inactive contractors will not be required to comply with this law as long as they remain inactive. However, if they wish to practice roofing under the C-39 regulations they must obtain some type of California roofing contractors insurance.
Liability and workers compensation insurance is extremely important not only the contractor (C-39) but also to the client. Without valid California roofing contractor insurance the customer could be held liable for any accidents or injuries that occurred on their property. Simply ask your contractor for a copy of their California roofing contractor insurance forms. If they can’t provide with any, choose a new contractor. |
